Homelessness 'Highest in UK'
Some homeless people are forced to sleep rough
Northern Ireland has the highest ratio of homelessness in the United Kingdom, according to the latest figures released. The assembly's independent auditor, which has criticised services provided to the homeless by the Housing Executive, revealed that almost 6,500 were homeless last year.
The report showed the Housing Executive spent an estimated £23.6m in 2000-2001 on temporary accommodation and other services to the homeless.
More than £7m of that total was spent by the executive on bed and breakfast accommodation.
Its chief executive, Paddy McIntyre, admitted that this was unsatisfactory.
My Comment About The Situation
Homelessness, which is one of the most serious problems, has greatly increased over the years. I think, the solution of this problem is to provide more housing programs. Living without a home, being on the streets or in shelters is what defines homelessness. There are many things that could have happend to the homeless people which might have contributed to their problem.I I believe that the reasons of homelessness differ from person to person. people become homeless for a lot of reasons. For example, earthquakes and hurricanes destroy homes and throw people into a temporary homeless condition. There are homeless teens who run away fom families and who are thrown away by families. Also, there are people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Besides, people with mental illnesses also become homeless quite often. For the solution of problem, an opportunity should be given to addicts to heal. the instutions should work cooperatively. Adequate incomes and healthcare should be provided.
